Global review links human decision‑making to improved livestock biosecurity
A recent review published by researchers at the University of Vermont, in partnership with colleagues from two Australian institutions, argues that effective biosecurity on livestock farms must go beyond technical guidelines and address the human decision‑making process. The study, which synthesises evidence from a range of animal‑health contexts, finds that farmers’ behaviours are shaped by a complex mix of economic pressures, cultural norms, risk perceptions and social networks, and that simply providing information is often insufficient to change practices.
The authors highlight several key findings. First, they identify that decision points—such as whether to quarantine an animal, adopt new vaccination protocols, or share disease information—are influenced by immediate cost‑benefit calculations and by the perceived credibility of advisory sources. Second, they show that interventions that incorporate behavioural science, such as tailored communication strategies and incentives aligned with farmers’ priorities, achieve higher uptake than standard educational outreach. Finally, the review calls for interdisciplinary collaboration between veterinarians, behavioural scientists, and policy makers to design biosecurity programmes that are both scientifically sound and socially acceptable.
