Global Hunger Declines for Third Consecutive Year, UN Report Finds

Global hunger fell for the third straight year in 2025, a trend highlighted in the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2026 (SOFI 2026) report released this Tuesday by five United Nations specialized agencies. The study notes that while the decline signals that progress is attainable, the gains are fragile and uneven across regions.

The report warns that the current trajectory falls short of the Sustainable Development Goal 2 target of ending hunger by 2030. It attributes the shortfall to persistent food insecurity in conflict zones, climate‑related shocks, and uneven distribution of aid and resources. The five agencies—FAO, IFAD, WFP, UNICEF, and WHO—stress the need for sustained investment and coordinated policy action to reinforce the gains made.
