Global crackdown leads to 39 arrests in South Africa for romance and investment scams

South African law enforcement announced the successful conclusion of a coordinated operation that resulted in the arrest of 39 individuals suspected of orchestrating romance and investment scams across the country. The arrests were carried out by the South African Police Service in collaboration with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, following weeks of intelligence gathering and undercover work.

Authorities indicated that the suspects allegedly used online platforms to lure victims with false promises of romantic relationships and lucrative investment opportunities, subsequently defrauding them of substantial sums of money. The operation seized cash, electronic devices and documents believed to be linked to the fraudulent schemes, and investigators are continuing to trace the full extent of the financial losses. The police have urged members of the public to exercise caution when engaging with unsolicited offers of romance or investment online, and to report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities.
