Glacial melt causes flood and debris flow in Nepal-China border valleys

A massive wall of ice, rock and muddy water surged through the Himalayan valleys along the Nepal‑China border, tearing down slopes, flooding settlements and damaging infrastructure in the affected region. The sudden outburst, identified as a glacial lake flood, triggered landslides and cut off road access, prompting emergency teams from both countries to launch rescue and relief operations while assessing the full extent of the damage.

The day before the disaster, local researcher Dipesh Chapagain was discussing with a colleague the potential scale of such an event, underscoring concerns that have long been raised about the vulnerability of Himalayan communities to glacial melt and slope instability.
