Giardiasis cases hit highest level in England since 2016

Cases of giardiasis, an intestinal infection that triggers diarrhea, bloating and gas, have risen to their highest level in England since 2016, according to newly released figures from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). The agency’s latest surveillance data show a marked increase in laboratory‑confirmed reports over the past year, pushing the annual total above the levels recorded in the previous six years.

Health officials attribute the surge to a combination of factors, including higher detection rates, changes in water‑borne exposure and increased travel to regions where the parasite is endemic. UKHSA has urged clinicians to consider giardiasis in patients presenting with persistent gastrointestinal symptoms and has reminded the public to practice safe food and water hygiene, especially when camping or using untreated water sources. The agency will continue to monitor the trend and assess whether additional control measures are needed to curb the spread.
