Ghanaian artist Jeaurs “Heavy J” Affutu is following a different path. While sitting on his porch in Teshie near Accra, he mixed red oil paint and applied it to a flour sack canvas, adding a knife‑wielding figure that, despite its violent pose, represents Prince Eric from Disney’s animated fairy‑tale *The Little Mermaid*. Above the prince he has sketched a skull, an element unrelated to the story. “We add more to make people interested,” Affutu explained, noting that his goal is to capture viewers’ attention rather than replicate the film exactly. His work illustrates how contemporary artists reinterpret familiar characters, blending familiar motifs with unexpected imagery to create fresh visual narratives.
