Germany accuses Russia of airport drone attack and orders consulate closure

Germany announced on Tuesday that it had identified Russia as the perpetrator of an attempted “hybrid attack” last month, in which an explosive‑laden drone was directed at a strategic German airport. The German government said the incident was a clear violation of international law and a threat to national security, and it has outlined a series of diplomatic counter‑measures in response.

The European Union immediately expressed “full solidarity” with Germany, while NATO confirmed its commitment to defend all member states, including Britain, Estonia and Poland, which have all offered strong backing. These statements underscore the broader alliance’s stance against the alleged Russian aggression and signal coordinated support for Germany’s security concerns.

In addition to the diplomatic warnings, Germany will close the Russian consulate in Bonn later this month and is set to cancel the contract for the Russian House cultural centre in Berlin, according to Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul.
