German WWI Submarine Leaking TNT in Danish Waters

A World War I submarine wreck off the coast of Denmark has begun leaking large amounts of TNT into the surrounding sea, the seabed and nearby marine life, according to scientists monitoring the site. The vessel, which sank more than a century ago, is now corroding and releasing explosive residues that are contaminating the local ecosystem.

Researchers warn that the Danish wreck is just one of thousands of similar World War I and World War II wrecks scattered across European waters that could pose escalating environmental threats as their metal hulls degrade. The gradual release of explosive compounds threatens to disrupt marine habitats, contaminate food webs and potentially harm human health if the toxins accumulate in seafood.
