Gene-edited pig kidney functions for nine months after transplant
Gene‑edited pig kidneys are being evaluated as a potential solution for the chronic shortage of human donor organs. In a pioneering study, researchers transplanted kidneys from pigs whose genomes were altered to eliminate key immune‑triggering proteins into brain‑dead human recipients, marking the first time such xenografts have been placed in a human body under controlled conditions.
The donor pigs were engineered to lack the α‑galactosyl (α‑Gal) epitope and to express human complement‑regulatory proteins, modifications intended to reduce hyperacute rejection. The transplanted kidneys began producing urine within hours and maintained stable blood flow for the duration of the observation periods, which ranged from 48 to 72 hours. Histological analysis showed limited immune activation, and no immediate life‑threatening complications were reported. The trial, conducted under the oversight of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health, involved three separate recipients and was designed to assess safety, organ function, and immunologic response before proceeding to longer‑term studies.
These early results suggest that genetically modified porcine kidneys could eventually serve as a bridge for patients on transplant waiting lists, potentially reducing mortality associated with prolonged dialysis. Ongoing research will focus on extending graft survival, refining immunosuppressive protocols, and initiating clinical trials in living patients, steps that could bring xenotransplantation closer to routine clinical use.
