Gene-edited beagles lack key allergy protein, creating hypoallergenic pets
Scientists at a biotech company have used gene‑editing techniques to produce two beagles that no longer trigger the common dog allergy protein. The dogs, one of which is named Bailey, have been engineered so that their saliva and hair lack the key allergen that typically causes sneezing and other allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
Matt Walker, who previously could not pet a dog without sneezing, has now been able to interact with Bailey in Central Park, feeding her peanut butter and playing fetch. The gene‑edited dogs do not produce the allergenic protein, although Walker’s own allergies remain unchanged. The project demonstrates that precise editing of canine genomes can eliminate specific allergens while preserving the animals’ normal behavior and health.
The creation of hypoallergenic dogs illustrates the potential for gene‑editing to reduce allergen exposure for pet owners. While further studies are needed to assess long‑term safety and broader applicability, the technique offers a promising avenue for making pet ownership more accessible to people with severe allergies.
