Gaza camera repairman maintains equipment for journalists documenting war

Journalists covering the ongoing conflict in Gaza face constant threats to their equipment as shelling, electricity outages and dust storms damage cameras and recording devices. In the midst of these challenges, Mohammed Radwan, a local camera repair specialist, has become a crucial support figure, maintaining and refurbishing broken gear so reporters can continue to document the war. Radwan operates from a modest workshop near the media district, where he receives battered lenses, broken shutters and malfunctioning batteries from news crews operating in the field.

Since the escalation of hostilities in October, Radwan has repaired more than 150 pieces of equipment, according to records kept by the local press association. He employs a combination of spare parts salvaged from discarded devices and improvised fixes, such as using household tools to realign camera mounts and rewire circuitry damaged by power surges. By extending the operational life of these tools, Radwan enables journalists to transmit images and video that would otherwise be lost, sustaining the flow of information to international audiences.
