Fusobacterium Identified as Biomarker for Aggressive Colorectal Cancer
Research into the molecular underpinnings of colorectal cancer (CRC) has taken a significant step forward with the release of preliminary findings from the multicenter FUSOMAP project. Led by the Molecular Oncology Group at VHIO, a prestigious cancer research institution, the study has shed light on the role of Fusobacterium in the progression of CRC. According to the study, published in ESMO Open, the presence of Fusobacterium within tumor samples can serve as a key indicator of a more aggressive form of the disease.
The research reveals that CRC patients with intratumoral Fusobacterium exhibit a weaker immune response, which in turn limits the effectiveness of adjuvant chemotherapy following surgery. Furthermore, these patients are at a higher risk of disease recurrence. These findings have significant implications for the treatment and management of CRC, suggesting that Fusobacterium could be used as a prognostic and predictive biomarker in patients with resectable CRC.
