French diplomats detained and abused by Iranian security services

French Foreign Minister Jean‑Noël Barrot announced on Monday that two officials of the French embassy in Iran had been subjected to an “extremely serious act of intimidation” by Iranian security services. According to Barrot, the officials were detained and interrogated for several hours the day before the statement was made.

Barrot added that one of the detained diplomats also suffered physical abuse during the interrogation. The incident has prompted the French government to demand a full explanation from Iranian authorities and to review the safety protocols for its diplomatic staff in Tehran.
