France Wildfires Evacuate Over 20,000 in Tourist Town

Firefighters and military units have converged on the western outskirts of Bordeaux after a series of wildfires swept through the region. Roughly 800 professional firefighters, supported by hundreds of gendarmes and soldiers, were mobilised to contain the blaze and protect nearby communities. The operation was coordinated by the regional fire brigade in partnership with the French Gendarmerie and the Army’s engineering units.

The incident, which began in the early hours of Tuesday, has threatened residential areas, agricultural land, and several natural reserves. Command posts established at the edge of the town have deployed water‑bombing aircraft, ground hoses, and bulldozers to create firebreaks. Military personnel are primarily tasked with securing access routes, providing logistical support, and assisting in the evacuation of residents from high‑risk zones.

At the time of reporting, the flames have been largely contained to the outskirts, with no major infrastructure losses confirmed. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and to follow evacuation orders if issued. The combined effort of civilian and military forces is expected to prevent the fire from spreading further into the city and to safeguard the region’s ecological assets.
