France links heatwave to surge in drownings, 301 dead since June 19

A government minister warned on Tuesday that many people have been taking unnecessary risks by entering bodies of water, a behavior that has contributed to a sharp rise in fatalities. Since 19 June, officials have recorded 301 deaths linked to drowning or water‑related incidents, prompting renewed calls for heightened public awareness and stricter safety measures.

The minister emphasized that the surge in casualties coincides with a period of unusually warm weather and increased recreational activity near rivers, lakes and coastal areas. Authorities are urging residents and visitors to heed local advisories, use designated swimming zones, and avoid swimming alone or under hazardous conditions. The government says it will intensify patrols and public‑education campaigns to reduce the number of preventable deaths.
