Former rebel Malik Agar Ayyir proposes national dialogue to end Sudan civil war

Sudan’s former rebel leader and senior political figure Malik Agar Ayyir has called for a nationwide dialogue aimed at ending the country’s civil war and transitioning to democratic civilian governance. In a statement released on Monday, Agar outlined a framework that would bring together representatives from the Sudanese Armed Forces, the Rapid Support Forces, political parties, civil society groups and regional stakeholders to negotiate a cease‑fire, a power‑sharing arrangement and a roadmap for elections.

The proposal comes amid a deteriorating security situation that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions since the conflict erupted in April 2023. International mediators have previously attempted to broker peace, but talks have stalled over disagreements on the composition of a transitional authority and the integration of armed groups. Agar’s initiative seeks to institutionalize negotiations through a structured national conference, emphasizing inclusivity and adherence to Sudan’s 2019 constitutional declaration. If accepted, the dialogue could pave the way for a unified civilian government and a cessation of hostilities, although its success will depend on the willingness of the warring factions to compromise and on sustained diplomatic support.
