Former Ecuadorian President Lenín Moreno Imprisoned on Corruption Charges

Ecuador’s former president Lenín Moreno has publicly denied allegations that he accepted bribes from a Chinese construction firm in exchange for awarding the company a contract to build a hydroelectric power plant. The accusations, which surfaced during a broader anti‑corruption probe into public works projects, claim that Moreno received illicit payments to influence the selection process for the $1.2 billion venture slated for the Amazon‑region province of Sucumbíos.

Moreno’s office issued a statement asserting that no wrongdoing occurred and that he has cooperated fully with judicial authorities. Prosecutors, however, say they possess documentary evidence and witness testimonies linking the former president to the contract negotiations.
