Forecast Error Influences Public Emotions During Disasters
A recent study published in GeoHealth sheds light on the emotional impact of weather forecast inaccuracies on the public, particularly during severe weather events. Researchers from the Department of Environmental Engineering at POSTECH, led by Professor Jonghun Kam and Kiru Kim, investigated how different types of forecast errors influence public emotions during the landfall of Typhoon Khanun. The study employed artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing (NLP) to analyze online comments and emotions expressed by the public.
The findings reveal that forecast errors of varying degrees can evoke distinct emotional responses among the public. Overestimation of a storm's severity, for instance, can lead to heightened anxiety and fear, as people become more prepared for a worst-case scenario. Conversely, underestimation can result in a sense of relief, but also potentially increase frustration and anger when the reality of the situation sets in. The researchers discovered that these emotional responses can be triggered by subtle differences in forecast accuracy, highlighting the complex relationship between weather forecasting, public perception, and emotional well-being.
The study's findings have significant implications for weather forecasting and emergency management. By understanding how different types of forecast errors influence public emotions, policymakers and emergency responders can develop more effective communication strategies to mitigate the emotional impact of severe weather events.
