Florida scrub-jays breed early following large-scale translocation

Biologist Lauren Deaner, who has spent almost twenty years working directly with Florida scrub‑jays, is now applying her extensive field experience to graduate research at the University of Central Florida’s Integrative Biology program. Her long‑term involvement in the species’ population recovery and translocation projects has positioned her to examine the complex interplay of genetics, behavior and population dynamics that underpins the resilience of threatened wildlife.

As a doctoral candidate, Deaner is conducting a multidisciplinary study that integrates genetic analyses with behavioral observations and demographic modeling to assess the long‑term recovery prospects of imperiled species. By linking field‑based data on scrub‑jay survival, breeding success and movement patterns with molecular insights, the research aims to identify the factors most critical for sustaining viable populations and to inform future conservation strategies for similarly endangered taxa.
