Flash flood in Grand Canyon leaves 15 missing, 60 evacuated

Dozens of visitors were evacuated Saturday afternoon after a sudden flash‑flood swept through the Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch area of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, the National Park Service said. The rapid rise in water levels forced park staff and the Arizona Department of Public Safety to move more than 60 people to safety, and officials later reported that at least 15 individuals remained missing or unaccounted for.

Rescue teams continued to search the canyon on Sunday morning, employing ground crews and aerial support to locate any remaining victims and to assess damage to trails and facilities. The National Park Service urged hikers and campers to avoid the affected region until conditions stabilize and investigations are complete, emphasizing that the incident underscores the inherent risks of sudden weather events in the park’s remote terrain.
