FBI Warns of Cybercrime Extortion Schemes

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued a public warning regarding a coordinated wave of cyber extortion campaigns targeting both adults and minors. According to the agency’s latest alert, criminal actors are systematically attempting to access personal and intimate photographs to leverage against victims for financial gain or other concessions. The FBI emphasized that these schemes are increasingly prevalent and exploit widely used digital communication platforms to identify and compromise unsuspecting individuals.

Investigators report that perpetrators typically initiate contact through social media, dating applications, or messaging services, often establishing a false sense of trust before requesting sensitive images. Once the material is obtained, the criminals threaten to distribute it publicly or forward it to the victim’s contacts unless a ransom is paid. The FBI cautioned that many of these threats are part of automated or mass-distributed scam operations and advised victims to immediately halt communication, preserve all digital evidence, and report the incidents to local law enforcement and the Internet Crime Complaint Center.

Law enforcement officials note that paying extortion demands rarely results in the permanent removal of stolen content and frequently signals to criminals that a victim remains vulnerable to repeated attacks. The FBI continues to track these campaigns and urges the public to maintain strict privacy controls, verify the authenticity of online contacts, and utilize platform reporting tools to help disrupt these illicit operations.
