Face Nerve Stimulation Boosts Brain Signaling and Memory
Scientists have reported that brief, patterned electrical stimulation applied to the facial nerve can enhance neural communication and improve performance on memory tasks. In a controlled experiment, participants received bursts of low‑intensity current to the facial nerve while their brain activity was monitored with electroencephalography. Researchers found that the stimulation increased the synchrony of neuronal firing in cortical regions associated with memory, and participants subsequently scored higher on standardized recall tests than when no stimulation was applied.
The findings suggest that targeted peripheral nerve stimulation may modulate central nervous system function in a measurable way. While the study was limited to healthy adults and short‑term memory assessments, the authors propose that such non‑invasive techniques could be explored as adjunctive therapies for memory disorders or cognitive decline.
