FA, RFU, ECB seek tax credits to boost women's sport TV coverage
A coalition of England’s top sporting bodies has formally asked the chancellor to introduce tax credits for production companies that broadcast women’s sport. The letter, signed by the chief executives of the Football Association, Rugby Football Union and England and Wales Cricket Board, was sent in partnership with leading broadcasters and YouTube. The request aims to lower the cost of televising women’s matches and competitions, thereby encouraging greater media coverage across the country.
The correspondence outlines the financial burden that production companies face when covering women’s events and argues that tax relief would make it easier for broadcasters to commit to regular, high‑quality coverage. By aligning the interests of governing bodies, broadcasters and a major digital platform, the coalition seeks to create a more sustainable ecosystem for women’s sport. The chancellor is expected to review the proposal in the coming weeks, with the sporting community awaiting a decision that could reshape the media landscape for female athletes.
If approved, the tax credits could increase the number of televised women’s fixtures and improve the visibility of female talent. The initiative follows a broader push across the UK to promote gender equality in sport, and stakeholders anticipate that enhanced coverage will drive higher viewership, sponsorship and participation rates. The outcome of the chancellor’s review will be closely monitored by all parties involved.
