Scientists are evaluating a novel therapeutic approach for mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer linked to asbestos exposure that has limited treatment options. The experimental drug targets peroxiredoxin‑3 (PRX3), an antioxidant protein that tumors exploit to withstand high levels of oxidative stress. By disabling PRX3, the compound induces lethal oxidative damage within cancer cells, offering a counterintuitive strategy that attacks the disease’s survival mechanism rather than the cells directly.
In an early‑phase clinical trial, the PRX3 inhibitor halted disease progression in 67 percent of participants and generated promising overall survival data.
