European MPs demand probe of FIFA chief over Balogun suspension reversal

Lawmakers across several parliaments have condemned FIFA’s decision to lift the suspension imposed on Nigerian striker Balogun following an intervention by former U.S. President Donald Trump, calling the move “a disgrace” to the sport’s governing body. The suspension, originally handed down in 2023 for alleged involvement in a match‑fixing scheme, was annulled after Trump publicly urged FIFA to reconsider the penalty, citing concerns over due process and player rights.

The backlash comes amid growing criticism that FIFA’s disciplinary procedures are susceptible to external influence. Parliamentary representatives from the United Kingdom, Nigeria and the United States have urged the federation to reaffirm its commitment to impartiality and to review its governance structures. They argue that allowing a political figure to override a disciplinary ruling erodes confidence in the integrity of international football and sets a dangerous precedent for future cases.

FIFA has yet to issue a formal response to the lawmakers’ statements.
