EU to Require AI Content Labels from August 2

The European Union has adopted a new rule that requires any content that is generated by artificial intelligence and that could be mistaken for human‑produced material to carry a clear, visible label. The mandate, part of the Digital Services Act, applies to all online platforms that host user‑generated or editorial content, including social media sites, news portals and video‑sharing services. The aim is to increase transparency and help consumers distinguish between human and AI‑produced text, images, audio and video.

Under the regulation, platforms must provide a label that is easy to understand and that identifies the content as AI‑generated. The rule also obliges operators to maintain records of the algorithms used and to give users the ability to request a human review of the labeling. Failure to comply can result in fines of up to 6 % of a company’s global annual turnover, and the requirement is set to take effect in 2025, giving firms a short window to adjust their content‑moderation and labeling systems.

The decision follows growing concerns about the spread of synthetic media and its potential to mislead audiences. By making AI‑generated content explicitly identifiable, the EU seeks to curb misinformation while preserving the benefits of generative technologies. The new labeling standard is expected to set a precedent that could influence similar regulations in other jurisdictions.
