EU Ministers Approve New Air Passenger Rights Package

EU transport ministers have formally approved a new package of air‑passenger rights reforms that aim to make compensation claims more accessible for travelers across the bloc. The measures, which update the existing Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, introduce a streamlined, EU‑wide online portal for filing claims and lower the administrative thresholds that have previously hindered passengers from pursuing compensation. Under the revised rules, airlines will be required to provide clearer information about passenger entitlements and to process valid claims within a set timeframe, with stronger penalties for non‑compliance.

The reforms, the result of several years of negotiations between the European Commission, the Parliament and member states, are intended to reduce bureaucratic obstacles and improve enforcement of passenger rights. Once the legislation is ratified by the European Parliament, the new procedures are expected to take effect next year, offering a more uniform and efficient system for travelers seeking redress for delays, cancellations or denied boarding.
