EU diplomat says Russian train strike aimed to deter Western support for Ukraine

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Monday that the Russian missile strike that hit a Warsaw‑bound train near the Ukraine‑Poland border was intended to “scare” Western countries from supporting Kyiv. The attack occurred shortly after a delegation of senior Western officials passed through the area, prompting Kallas to describe the strike as a deliberate attempt to deter political and material assistance to Ukraine. She urged the international community to respond by maintaining, rather than reducing, its backing for Kyiv.

Kallas made the remarks in Brussels, where France 24’s Dave Keating reported the comments. The statement comes amid ongoing Russian attacks on transport and civilian infrastructure in the region, which have heightened concerns about the safety of cross‑border travel and the broader security environment in Eastern Europe. The EU official called on Kyiv’s allies to “do the opposite” and continue their support despite the intimidation tactics.
