EU bans social media for users under 13
The European Union is moving forward with the “EU Kids Acts,” a legislative package aimed at limiting the influence of major technology platforms over minors. The proposals call for mandatory age verification mechanisms, increased parental oversight tools, and stricter data‑privacy safeguards for users under 18. Lawmakers argue that the measures will address concerns about targeted advertising, algorithmic content recommendations, and the collection of personal information from children.
Implementation, however, faces several hurdles. Tech firms have warned that robust age‑check systems could be technically complex and may conflict with existing privacy regulations such as the GDPR. Privacy advocates caution that the required data for verification could expose minors to new risks, while consumer‑rights groups question the feasibility of enforcing parental controls across diverse platforms. As the EU Parliament prepares for a vote later this year, the balance between protecting children online and respecting privacy and operational constraints remains a central point of debate.
