EU and UK sign treaty to end Gibraltar border checks

The European Union and the United Kingdom finalized a new agreement on Tuesday that will eliminate border controls between Gibraltar and Spain, a change that comes six years after the UK’s departure from the bloc. The deal restores the free flow of people across the frontier, a right that had been curtailed by the introduction of checks following the 2020 withdrawal.

Under the terms, residents of Gibraltar will be able to cross into Spain using their residence cards, while Spanish citizens will use a standard government ID card to enter the British territory. The arrangement is part of broader post‑Brexit negotiations aimed at easing movement for residents of the small Spanish enclave and the British overseas territory.

The agreement is expected to simplify daily commutes and commercial activity for both sides, signalling a practical step toward normalising relations in the region after the complexities that arose from the UK’s exit from the EU.
