EU Airport Border Checks Cause Delays

Airports across the European Union are bracing for longer waiting times this summer as the bloc implements a new digital border‑control system that will replace many manual checks. The system, part of the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES), is scheduled to go live in June and will require travelers to register biometric data and travel details in a centralized database before entering or leaving the Schengen area.

The rollout covers major hubs in France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands, where authorities have warned that processing times could increase by up to fifteen minutes per passenger during the initial phase. Airport operators are adding extra staff and expanding self‑service kiosks to mitigate delays, while airlines are urging passengers to arrive earlier than usual. Officials from the European Commission have emphasized that the digital platform aims to strengthen security and streamline migration monitoring, and they will monitor performance closely throughout the summer travel season.
