Estrogen Therapy Linked to Lower Alzheimer's Risk in Women
Recent research has shed new light on the potential benefits of estrogen-only hormone therapy for women in later life, particularly in regards to dementia and Alzheimer's disease. A large-scale study involving over 21,000 participants has found a significant link between hormone therapy use and a reduced risk of dementia diagnosis. According to the study, women who used estrogen-only hormone therapy had 39% lower odds of being diagnosed with dementia, compared to those who did not undergo hormone therapy.
The study also discovered a correlation between hormone therapy use and fewer signs of Alzheimer's disease in the brains of participants at autopsy. Specifically, hormone therapy users showed 35% lower odds of Alzheimer's-related brain changes, including the presence of amyloid plaques and tau tangles. Additionally, biomarker tests revealed lower levels of amyloid buildup among hormone therapy users, suggesting a potential protective effect against the development of Alzheimer's disease.
The findings of this study offer promising insights into the potential benefits of estrogen-only hormone therapy for women in later life, particularly in terms of dementia and Alzheimer's disease prevention.
