Errol Spence Jr retires after loss to Tim Tszyu

Former welterweight world champion Errol Spence Jr. announced his retirement from professional boxing on Tuesday, following a loss in his comeback bout against Australian contender Tim Tszyu in Sydney. The fight, staged at the Qudos Bank Arena, marked Spence’s first appearance in the ring since a severe eye injury forced him out of competition in 2022. Tszyu, the undefeated son of former light‑middleweight champion Kostya Tszyu, out‑pointed the American veteran over twelve rounds, handing Spence a unanimous decision defeat and effectively ending his bid to return to elite status.

Spence, a two‑time welterweight champion who held the WBC, IBF and WBA titles between 2017 and 2021, concluded a career that featured notable victories over Keith Thompson, Danny Gomez and a dramatic knockout of Mikey Hernandez. Despite his accomplishments, recurring health concerns and the loss to Tszyu prompted the 33‑year‑old to step away from the sport.
