Epstein-Barr Virus Linked to Increased Risk of Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic autoimmune disorder that damages the central nervous system, has long been associated with prior infection by the Epstein‑Barr virus (EBV). Epidemiological data show that nearly all individuals diagnosed with MS carry serological evidence of past EBV exposure, suggesting a strong correlation between the two conditions.

A 2022 analysis of millions of U.S. military recruits quantified this relationship, revealing that infection with EBV increased the risk of developing MS by a factor of 32. The study’s large sample size and prospective design provide robust support for the hypothesis that EBV plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of MS, reinforcing the need for further research into preventive and therapeutic strategies targeting the virus.
