Electrical Safety First warns UK travellers about unsafe plug adapters

The group warns that many travellers purchase inexpensive adapters, chargers and extension leads without checking compatibility with local voltage and plug standards, increasing the risk of electric shock, fire or damage to personal devices.

The charity advises travellers to verify the voltage rating of appliances, use certified adapters that match the destination’s plug type, and consider portable voltage converters for high‑power items such as hairdryers. It also recommends buying products from reputable retailers that carry the CE mark or other recognized safety certifications, and to avoid “cheap knock‑offs” often sold in airport shops. By taking these precautions, the campaign says, holidaymakers can reduce the likelihood of electrical accidents and ensure a safer, more reliable travel experience.
