Electric vehicles provide lower emissions and cost savings for most U.S. drivers
US drivers are increasingly turning to electric vehicles (EVs) as a means of cutting fuel costs and reducing greenhouse‑gas emissions, a new MIT News report finds. The study, which analyzed data from the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency, shows that EV owners save an average of $1,200 per year on fuel and maintenance compared with conventional gasoline vehicles. The report also estimates that widespread EV adoption could lower national CO₂ emissions by up to 15 percent over the next decade.
Key findings highlight that the cost advantage grows as battery prices fall and charging infrastructure expands. The analysis notes that drivers in states with higher electricity rates still see net savings when factoring in lower maintenance costs and incentives such as tax credits and rebates. In addition, the study points out that EVs produce no tail‑pipe emissions, which translates into measurable health benefits in urban areas where air pollution is a major concern.
The MIT research underscores the dual economic and environmental benefits of electric mobility. While the transition to EVs requires continued investment in charging networks and grid upgrades, the data suggest that both consumers and the broader society stand to gain from the shift away from internal‑combustion engines.
