The United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warned on Friday that the world is likely to experience an increase in blistering heatwaves and other extreme weather events in the coming months, attributing the trend to intensifying El Niño conditions in the tropical Pacific. The agency’s statement notes that the warming of sea surface temperatures associated with El Niño can amplify atmospheric circulation patterns, leading to higher temperatures, altered rainfall distribution, and more frequent extreme weather across multiple continents.
