El Niño intensifies, expected to bring months of extreme heat worldwide
Fuelled by unusually warm Pacific waters, the El Niño climate pattern is intensifying and has not yet reached its peak. Meteorological agencies worldwide report that sea‑surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific are well above average, a condition that typically amplifies atmospheric circulation and drives global weather anomalies.
Forecasters are now almost certain that the current El Niño episode will continue through February 2027, bringing atypically warm conditions to large portions of the globe in the coming months. The sustained heat is expected to influence temperature and precipitation patterns across continents, potentially affecting agriculture, water resources, and energy demand as the world adapts to the prolonged warming trend.
