Ebola wildlife origins key to preventing future outbreaks
A recent surge of the Andes virus on a cruise ship has drawn attention to the broader threat posed by emerging hemorrhagic fevers. The outbreak, which has produced 13 confirmed cases and three deaths, underscores how quickly a pathogen can spread in close quarters. Meanwhile, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola—responsible for the current epidemic—has continued to circulate quietly, with more than 1,250 reported cases and at least 362 fatalities.
Bundibugyo virus is a highly lethal hemorrhagic disease that manifests abruptly with severe headaches, diarrhea, renal and hepatic failure, and, in some instances, internal and external bleeding. Its transmission remains a concern even after death, as family members preparing bodies for burial can be exposed. The lack of a clearly identified source for either virus hampers containment efforts and heightens the risk to both human populations and wildlife that may act as reservoirs or spillover hosts.
These concurrent outbreaks highlight the critical need for rapid source identification and robust surveillance. Without pinpointing the origins of these viruses, public health authorities cannot fully mitigate the spread to humans or prevent unnecessary harm to animal populations. Continued investment in epidemiological investigation and cross‑sector collaboration will be essential to control current cases and avert future epidemics.
