Ebola Virus Spreads to Displacement Camps in DR Congo

The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) has warned that the rapidly spreading Ebola Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has infected 19 internally displaced persons, five of whom have died. The outbreak, which has already claimed more than 100 lives in the country, now threatens the safety of communities living in displacement camps across the region.

Health authorities in the DRC have intensified surveillance and contact‑tracing efforts in the affected provinces, while international partners have pledged additional medical supplies and support for isolation facilities. The UNHCR has called for urgent assistance to ensure that displaced populations receive adequate protection, testing, and treatment, and has urged governments and donors to accelerate vaccine deployment to curb the spread of the virus.
