Ebola Outbreak Worsens in DRC, Uganda Reports Progress

Uganda has officially discharged its last remaining Ebola patient, bringing the country’s 2023–2024 outbreak to an end. The patient, who had been isolated in the western district of Kasese, was released after a 21‑day treatment period and a period of negative virological testing. Health authorities confirmed that no new cases have been reported since the patient’s discharge, and the national health ministry has declared the outbreak over.

At the same time, the World Health Organization has warned that the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo is expanding at a pace that has never been seen before. According to WHO officials, the number of new cases in the eastern province of North Kivu has surged, driven by widespread community transmission and challenges in contact tracing. The organization has called for intensified surveillance, vaccination campaigns, and international support to curb the rapid spread.

The contrast between Uganda’s successful containment and the accelerating crisis in the DRC underscores the importance of sustained public health measures. While Uganda’s case count now stands at zero, the situation in the DRC remains urgent, prompting continued global attention and resources to prevent further escalation.
