Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (WSL) highlighted in a recent commentary that the phenomenon may stem either from an adaptive response—where trees shed foliage to preserve water transport—or from irreversible damage inflicted by extreme temperatures and moisture scarcity. The distinction between these mechanisms remains unclear, complicating assessments of forest health during climate stress.
The uncertainty surrounding the cause of early leaf discoloration raises concerns that current estimates of forest resilience to climate extremes could be overly optimistic. If browning reflects damage rather than a protective strategy, affected ecosystems may experience reduced carbon uptake and heightened vulnerability to further stressors. WSL researchers call for targeted studies to differentiate between adaptive leaf loss and physiological injury, thereby improving predictive models of forest response under a warming climate.
