Drones Illuminate NYC Skyline in 9/11 Tribute Test
A drone light show illuminated the New York City skyline Wednesday night as part of a test for the upcoming “Tribute in Light” installation that will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The display, staged over the city’s iconic skyline, marked the first public rehearsal of the planned memorial.
The test featured 2,977 drones, each representing one of the lives lost on 9/11, 2001. The drones were programmed to fly in precise formations, projecting a coordinated light display that mirrors the original Tribute in Light’s twin beams of white light. Organizers used the event to fine‑tune flight paths, lighting sequences, and safety protocols ahead of the full installation.
The rehearsal underscores the memorial’s intent to honor the victims through a technologically advanced tribute. The full “Tribute in Light” installation is scheduled to debut on the anniversary, providing a new, dynamic way for New Yorkers and visitors to remember the tragedy.
