Drone footage shows 42,000‑hectare forest blaze in southwestern France

Drone footage taken on Wednesday, July 29, revealed the extensive devastation wrought by the wildfires that have swept through southwestern France. The images show charred landscapes, uprooted and scorched trees, and the skeletal remains of houses near Le Temple, underscoring the severity of the blaze. The fire, which has spread across the Landes region west of Bordeaux, has consumed roughly 42 000 hectares of pine forest, leaving a landscape of blackened earth and twisted stumps.

In response to the rapid spread, authorities ordered the evacuation of about 220 000 holidaymakers and local residents. The scale of the displacement has strained emergency services and accommodation facilities in the surrounding towns. Since the peak of the crisis, roughly 60 000 people have been permitted to return to their homes, although many areas remain under strict safety and monitoring protocols.

The wildfires highlight the growing vulnerability of the region to extreme heat and dry conditions. While the immediate threat has subsided, restoration efforts and investigations into the causes of the fire are underway.
