Doctor criticises NHS for failing to address organ transplant wait times

NHS Blood and Transplant’s medical director, Professor John H. S. Kelley, has warned that the current system for organ‑transplant waiting lists is “unfair” and that senior health leaders have yet to present a clear strategy to address the imbalance. In a recent briefing, Kelley highlighted that patients with similar clinical needs are experiencing widely varying wait times across the United Kingdom, a disparity he attributes to inconsistent allocation criteria and limited capacity in transplant centres.

The director called for an urgent review of the national organ‑allocation framework, urging the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England to accelerate reforms that would standardise prioritisation and improve transparency. He noted that while the number of donors has risen modestly in recent years, the demand for kidneys, livers, hearts and lungs continues to outstrip supply, leaving thousands on prolonged waiting lists. Kelley concluded that without decisive leadership and coordinated policy action, the inequities in organ‑transplant access are likely to persist, compromising patient outcomes and public confidence in the system.
