Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen affirmed her country’s commitment to defending Greenland on Wednesday, responding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s renewed interest in acquiring the autonomous territory. Speaking ahead of a NATO summit in Ankara, Frederiksen stated, “We are ready to defend every inch of NATO, including our own territory,” emphasizing Denmark’s resolve to safeguard its sovereignty and that of its territories. The remarks follow Trump’s recent comments suggesting the U.S. might pursue a purchase of Greenland, reviving a topic previously discussed in 2019.

Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, is not a NATO member but benefits from Danish security guarantees. Frederiksen reiterated that Greenland’s political status remains unchanged, with Denmark responsible for its defense. She added, “One of [NATO’s] core principles is that we protect each other,” underscoring the alliance’s collective security framework.
