Defcon Unveils Transparent Security Key Badge
At the recent Defcon hacking conference, security researchers uncovered a removable chip embedded in a standard access badge that can be extracted, inspected, and then re‑inserted for continued use. The chip, which is not normally intended for user removal, contains the authentication credentials that the badge transmits to access control systems. By physically removing the chip, attackers can read its contents, replicate the data, and re‑use the badge after the event has ended.
The discovery raises significant concerns for venues that rely on badge‑based security. If a chip can be taken out and reused, the badge’s unique identifier and associated permissions can be duplicated, potentially allowing unauthorized access to restricted areas or systems.
