Deep-Sea Molluscs Threatened by Mining, Red List Reports
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has added several new species to its Red List, highlighting the growing threat of deep‑sea mining to marine biodiversity. Among the most vulnerable are desert frogs and a range of molluscs that have evolved to thrive in the extreme conditions of hydrothermal vents, where temperatures can reach 450 °C (842 °F). These organisms, which include snails, limpets and clams, have adapted to the crushing pressures and chemical-rich waters of the ocean floor, yet their specialized habitats are now under siege.
A recent assessment found that roughly two‑thirds of the hundreds of mollusc species confined to deep‑sea vents face extinction risk. The primary driver is the expansion of deep‑sea mining operations, which disrupt the fragile ecosystems that support these species. The mining process destroys vent habitats and releases toxic byproducts, jeopardizing the survival of species that have evolved over millions of years to occupy a single, highly specialized niche.
The Red List findings underscore the urgent need for stricter regulation of deep‑sea mining and the protection of hydrothermal vent ecosystems. Without immediate action, the loss of these unique organisms could irreversibly alter the biodiversity of the planet’s most remote environments.
