Death toll nears 800 as Himalayan glacier collapse prompts rescue efforts

Specialised search‑and‑rescue (SAR) units have been deployed to assist ongoing recovery operations after a 6.8‑magnitude earthquake struck central Nepal on Tuesday and a massive landslide engulfed a village in Sichuan province, China, on Wednesday. In Nepal, the Nepalese Army’s Mountain Rescue Team, along with contingents from India’s National Disaster Response Force, the United States’ Disaster Assistance Response Team and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, have been conducting coordinated sweeps of the affected districts of Gorkha and Lamjung. In China, provincial rescue squads from Chengdu, the People’s Liberation Army engineering corps and volunteers from the Red Cross Society of China are focusing on debris removal and the extraction of survivors from the collapsed hillside near the town of Maoxian.

The SAR teams are employing a combination of ground search dogs, thermal imaging equipment and unmanned aerial vehicles to locate missing persons and assess structural damage. As of the latest reports, Nepal authorities have confirmed 112 deaths, 274 injuries and 58 individuals still unaccounted for, while Chinese officials have recorded 37 fatalities and 112 injuries, with rescue crews working around the clock to reach isolated pockets of the disaster zone. Logistical support, including medical supplies and temporary shelters, is being coordinated through joint operation centers in Kathmandu and Chengdu to ensure rapid distribution to affected communities.

Both governments have indicated that the rescue efforts will continue for several days, with additional international assistance on standby. Updates on casualty figures and the progress of recovery operations are expected to be released by the respective ministries of home affairs in Nepal and emergency management authorities in China.
