Deadly storm cuts power to half a million in Chile

A severe storm that swept across central Chile on Thursday has left approximately 500,000 residents without electricity and caused widespread damage to homes, roads and infrastructure. The high winds and heavy rainfall toppled trees and power lines in the Santiago metropolitan area and the surrounding valleys, plunging thousands of households into darkness and disrupting transportation and communication networks.

Emergency services and the national electricity company, Enel, have mobilized crews to restore power and assess structural damage. The Chilean government has deployed additional resources, including mobile medical units and temporary shelters, to assist affected communities. Early reports indicate that the storm has resulted in several injuries and at least one fatality, prompting a heightened alert from the national disaster management agency.
